Kaunas Picture Gallery

Communities Exhibition “In Memory of Paper“

The exhibition introduces J. Janonis paper factory and its community. Authentic stories will be materialized on paper, and the mechanisms of the no longer existing factory will be reconstructed to produce memories.

Turning points in politics and economy come into view on notebook covers and on their margins. The pre-war paper of Petrašiūnai preserves the handwriting of Salomėja Nėris. It also proves the Lithuanian identity in the form of a passport. Finally, having turned into temporary money of the newly restored Lithuania, the Kaunas paper rustles in a pocket.

These paper-based history witnesses are sensitively and wittily complemented by the stories of the factory workers and art pieces specially created for the exhibition.

”In Memory of Paper“continues the exhibition cycle “The Great Industry” by calling attention to the memory of communities of historical factories.
