We invite you to the opening of Jūratė Bučmytė and Albertas Krajinskas' exhibition "Tête-à-tête avec Čiurlionis" on Thursday, September 25, at 5 PM.
This exhibition "Tête-à-tête avec Čiurlionis" is an invitation to a mysterious world of painting of two artists – Jūratė Bučmytė and Albertas Krajinskas. A journey embracing pictures is awaiting the spectator where the nature is depicted in a way it was being seen and experienced by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. This nature is as if imbued with fairy tales and legends.
By seeking harmony between warm and cold hues, allegorical symbols of the sunlight and the luminaries of the night sky, the two painters are creating landscapes awakening any imagination. By interweaving poetic – and simultaneously mundane as well as easily recognizable – ethnic motifs, Jūratė Bučmytė and Albertas Krajinskas are as if showing us a metamorphosis of the world of our ancestors.
The two artists definitely care about the relationship of existence between the relentless elements of nature and human existence. The language of symbols is revealed both as tension dwelling between the human and the powers of nature, and the reconciliation between the human and the elements – these are ships trapped by sea waves and unable to advance and thrust their way forward – yet, when the tempest has subsided, and the ocean is not threatening anymore, the caravels can safely return to the port of call. Just like Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, the two painters have devoted lots of attention to the realm of the sea.
The landscapes of Jūratė Bučmytė and Albertas Krajinskas are brimming with a mood of mysticism. The artists are as if leading our glance to a destination of which we have no idea. Colors and shapes unite so that they could remind us of things we forgot long, long ago… Like in the pictures of Čiurlionis, in the compositions of the two painters, we can find anthropomorphic elements awakening and enriching the imagination of the spectator. These are majestic castles surrounded by all kinds of fantasy creatures. Their shapes fill up almost the entire space of some of the pictures. The glance of the observer has to thrust its way through the entirety in order to devour each and every fragment and element of this space. It is in this way that nature as if liberates itself from its traditional visualization, and the landscapes can thus become truly special, enriched with abundance of elements.
The exhibition is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of M. K. Čiurlionis.
