LITHUANIA TO THE WORLD

In the garden of the Historical Presidential Palace, Kaunas (Vilniaus St. 33), the anniversary 20th large-format archival photography exhibition “Lithuania to the World” is on display.

Open-air photographic exhibition “Lithuania to the world” tells the story about the efforts of the newly reemerged state to draw the world’s attention to Lithuania as a subject on the political stage. When the independence of Lithuania was proclaimed in 1918, the country started taking care of its international recognition. Return to civilized world was crucial. The start was daring: no invitation to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919–1920 – nevermind, here we come; not member of the League of Nations – nevermind, here is our agenda. The political ventures then were backed by appearances in cultural and sports events, by successful trade and non-governmental liaisons, later by outstanding aviation engineering and other state and individual achievements. The open-air exhibition “Lithuania to the world” traces the joint effort to export and sell our identity to the world.

The exhibition is organized by the Historical Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania in Kaunas and the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art.

The exhibition is part of the project “Citizens and the State: a Contemporary Perspective on Aspects of Lithuania’s Self-Creation.”
