The 10th International Watercolour Biennial "Baltic Bridges 2024. X // TEN".

Two years have passed and watercolour hues will once again flood the Kaunas summer. More than 60 artists from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Germany, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Ukraine, Denmark and Israel are taking part in the Biennial. "We have not strayed far from our original idea of bringing together artists from the countries around the Baltic Sea for an international watercolour gathering, thus continuing the tradition of Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian watercolour triennials that have been going on since 1968. Up to the end of the 20th century, the tradition was continued by Latvian artists, and, after a pause, revived in Lithuania with the opening of the first international exhibition entitled "Baltic Bridges" in 2006. The range of themes, techniques and materials of the exhibitions have expanded over the past two decades. This year's exhibition will again feature photographs and acrylics, objects and collages, reflecting on watercolour and dedicated to the essential qualities of this painting technique – transparency, translucency, multilayered surfaces and watery painting", says watercolour artist Eugenijus Nalevaika, the author of the idea of the Biennial.

The 2024 Biennial exhibition "Baltic Bridges. 2024. X // Ten" (curated by Eugenijus Nalevaika) will evaluate and analyse the apparent distance from "here (now) to there (a point X backwards and/or forwards)", while the title "Ten // X" encodes other meanings as well – the title symbolically contains the "serial number" of the 10th Biennial; X is a Roman numeral meaning 10 (ten); besides, it is an axis of the X coordinate system, the x means “the unknown“ in mathematics, and sometimes the x is used to denote the multiplication step.

The exhibition is open: 11 07 2024 – 25 08  2024
