3D AUTOSTEREOGRAM "THREE DIMENSIONAL FAIRY TALE“ BASED ON M. K. ČIURLIONIS PAINTING

3D autostereogram Three-dimensional Fairy Tale by Loreta Roževičiūtė-Elksnė and her creative group Vėjo Rožė.

This 3D autostereogram is based on M. K. Čiurlionis’ painting No. 2 of the triptych The Fairy Tale. But here, the image of a child with a sow-thistle flower and a mystical bird hovering above is hidden. The format of the work was enlarged and converted from horizontal to vertical (1.42 x 2.30 metres) so as to create an optical impression of rising as if weaving together the earth and the sky, transforming and interpreting the rhythmically repeating motifs in M. K. Čiurlionis’ The Creation of the World VIII, The Creation of the World IX and The Creation of the World XI. The stereogram created for the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art is one of the largest in the world.

In his artworks M. K. Čiurlionis often applied rhythmicity based on musical sounds. While observing an active pattern of the stereogram and plunging into the depths of a three-dimensional fairy tale, viewers are invited to experience the sounds of inner music by creating their own interpretation of the sounds.

Looking at the stereogram often helps to relax tired eyes and strengthens muscles of the eye as well. It also serves as a perfect way to reduce eye strain and fatigue experienced after working on the computer. Stereograms are also used in art therapy due to their positive emotional impact.

Loreta Roževičiūtė-Elksnė ( born in 1980, Kaunas). She graduated from Kaunas Antanas Martinaitis Art School in 1999, and in 2004 received a Bachelor’s of the Applied Textiles degree at the Kaunas Art Institute of the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Since 1995, she has been interested in autostereograms and the creation of them. In 2016, the artist founded a creative group A Wind Rose, which is a great aid in implementing artistic projects. A Wind Rose also works in collaboration with an eye clinic in applying stereograms for eye exercises and presents the group’s creation at the national and international museums. L. Roževičiūtė-Elksnė created 3D exhibitions “Real Things are Invisible” (2019) based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s “The Little Prince” and the exhibition of stereograms “The Garden of Paradise” (2022). The creation of A Wind Rose group is distinguished all over the world by the fact that the stereograms are hand-drawn and executed in large formats.
