Panevėžys-based photographer Evaldas Ivanauskas will present his series of works entitled "Conversation with Vincas Firinauskas". The exhibition presents large-format digital photomontages, which were created using the photographs from the 1930s' -1940s' (stored in the Panevėžys Local Lore Museum) made by Miežiškiai town photographer Vincas Firinauskas. In E. Ivanauskas photomontages, the heroes immortalised in the inter-war period come to life in another time and in other contexts, in distinctive mannier sometimes even in a dreamlike world-view.
"The series began by accident. In 2004, Panevėžys Local Lore Museum was preparing a publication called "Vincas Firinauskas and his Photography". The project manager Zita Pikelytė entrusted me, as the designer of the publication, to arrange the illustrations. While sorting through a large number of images, I felt the urge to rearrange the scenes in my own way, with the people from Firinauskas' photos as participants. I was affected by the magical pull of old photographs. The images contained something recognisable and close to my heart. The people looking out of the photographs reminded me of characters from personal memories and evoked the imagination", says E. Ivanauskas, the author of the exhibition.
Art historian Virginijus Kinčinaitis adds: "It is no coincidence that this series is called "Conversation with Vincas Firinauskas“. Museum archives contain incredible treasures of time-suppressed meanings. They provide a wealth of important answers about ourselves, our conditions and our lives, about death and the meaning of joyous moments. All of this is frozen in old photographs. Once they are awakened, the deepening conversation can last a long time, a lifetime. It is this perspective of the archive that is revealed in the visual dialogue between Evaldas Ivanauskas and Vincas Firinauskas. For that, we are grateful to them."
