The allure of William Kentridge’s works lies in the artist’s ability to create a situation for a viewer’s participation in the event. Visitors are expected not only to examine individual works. When travelling through the exhibition trajectory proposed by the artist and the stage designer Sabine Theunissen, they will inevitably experience alternative zones of mind and worldview which are constructed from works of various genres. In his studio, Kentridge starts his creative work by making a two-dimensional static drawing in coal. A further process includes erasing, replenishment and capturing alterations with a camera. In this way, the artist creates moving pictures – video works and cycles, combining them with filmed scenes. All objects are arranged in layers in the exhibition space by adding static, kinetic, and sound objects, finally part of the drawings is transferred on the gallery walls and stairs, thus creating overt spaces for each viewer. W. Kentridge participates in different performances himself, often becomes one of film characters, is engaged in producing operas, creating scenography objects and microworlds.
